Can diesel engines use biodiesel

Biodiesel, as a renewable energy source, is gradually being applied to replace traditional petro-diesel. Its raw materials are usually animal and vegetable oils, which are made through transesterification reactions. Its physical properties are similar to those of diesel and it can be directly used in some diesel engines. However, whether it is applicable or not needs to be comprehensively judged based on the engine type, usage ratio and working condition requirements.

Diesel engines are ignited by compression ignition, which has basic requirements for performance parameters such as the lubricity, viscosity and cetane number of the fuel. Common B5 (a mixture of 5% biodiesel and 95% regular diesel) and B10 blended fuels can usually be used without modifying the engine structure. Some engines allow the use of B20 or even a higher proportion of blended biodiesel, but it needs to be combined with fuel injection parameter adjustment, seal compatibility assessment and fuel system cleaning management.

Biodiesel has a high oxygen content and burns more completely, which helps to reduce soot emissions. However, when used in high proportions, NOx emissions may increase and need to be controlled in combination with a post-treatment system. Its natural lubricity helps compensate for the decline in lubrication performance caused by low-sulfur diesel and is suitable for some mechanical equipment that operates for a long time.

Diesel engine

It is worth noting that biodiesel is prone to condensation or crystallization in low-temperature environments, which affects the fluidity of the fuel and the starting performance of the engine. When using B20 or higher proportions, it is recommended to use a fuel preheating device or choose a low freezing point formula. In addition, biodiesel has poor storage stability and is prone to oxidation and deterioration. It is necessary to keep it away from light, seal it and replace it regularly.

For modern diesel engines equipped with high-pressure common rail, electronic fuel injection systems or DPF devices, it is necessary to confirm whether they have passed the original factory certification before using a high proportion of biodiesel. Some engine manufacturers have clear restrictions on the applicable grades of biodiesel. Using it beyond the scope may affect the performance of the equipment or the terms of the warranty.

Diesel engines have a certain compatibility with biodiesel. Under the premise of clear proportion, ambient temperature and equipment conditions, stable operation can be achieved. In practical applications, users should follow the technical specifications, select the appropriate mixing grade in combination with the equipment model, and regularly check the cleanliness and operating status of the fuel system.
